Not sure whatyou’ve got?

UTIs, yeast infections and BV can feel alike. Here’s how they usually differ. A doctor confirms which it is.

Urinary tract infection
UTI

A UTI is an infection in your bladder or urethra, usually caused by bacteria. It often makes peeing burn or sting and you may feel you need to go all the time. Most are treated with a short course of antibiotics.

Thrush
Yeast infection

Thrush is a very common overgrowth of yeast. It usually causes itching, soreness and a thick, white discharge, with little or no smell. It’s easy to treat with a cream, pessary or tablet.

Bacterial vaginosis
BV

BV happens when the usual balance of bacteria in the vagina changes. It can cause a thin, grey or white discharge with a fishy smell, often after sex. It isn’t an STI and is treated with a gel or tablets.

STI testingand treatment

Many STIs have no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know. Test privately at home, and get treatment from a doctor if you need it.

Frequently asked questions

  • They can feel similar. A UTI usually affects peeing, thrush often causes itching and thick discharge, and BV can cause a thin discharge with a fishy smell. Our questionnaire helps a doctor work out which it is.

  • Often not — a doctor can usually tell from your symptoms. If it isn’t clear, or it keeps coming back, a home swab test checks for the common infections first.

  • Depending on what a doctor finds: a short antibiotic course for a UTI, a cream, pessary or tablet for thrush, and a gel or tablets for BV. Everything arrives in plain packaging.

  • Tell your doctor. Repeat infections sometimes need a different approach — a longer course, a preventive plan or a test to rule out something else.

  • Some treatments are safe in pregnancy and some aren’t, so let the doctor know. They’ll choose an option that’s suitable for you.

  • Your health information is only seen by the licensed doctors and pharmacy team looking after your care. It is never sold or shared for marketing. Our Privacy Policy has the detail.
